Watershed Hydrology & Bird Habitat Analysis
This is a demonstration application for exploring relationships between watershed hydrology and bird habitat across the western United States. It combines USGS Watershed Boundary Dataset units, annual riparian habitat models, and streamflow records into a single interactive atlas.
Provided for demonstration and research purposes. Habitat model outputs are not intended for regulatory use. No warranties implied or expressed.

Where: Launch (splash screen)
What this module produces
A single interactive atlas: 21 HUC-2 regions that drill down to HUC-4 basins, HUC-8 sub-basins and HUC-10 sub-watersheds, with habitat models and hydrologic analysis layered onto each unit.
The same walkthrough in written form — one card per module.
Module 1
Launch (splash screen)
What this module produces
A single interactive atlas: 21 HUC-2 regions that drill down to HUC-4 basins, HUC-8 sub-basins and HUC-10 sub-watersheds, with habitat models and hydrologic analysis layered onto each unit.
Module 2
Map View → Species → Selector
What this module produces
Sets the active species context for the workspace, so habitat area, regressions and exports always refer to the species you selected.
Module 3
Map View → Species → Habitat Time Series
What this module produces
A year-by-year habitat area profile (hectares) for the selected unit, with mean, 95% confidence interval, patch counts and annual change.
Downloads it generates
CSV + metadata ZIP
Annual habitat area and patch counts for the selected unit, packaged with a metadata file describing the source layers.
Module 4
Map View → Basins
What this module produces
Watershed selection plus multi-year habitat overlays, with per-year habitat area, patch counts and summary statistics calculated inside the selected boundary.
Downloads it generates
Per-year layer summaries
Habitat area (ha) and patch counts for each active year of the selected species, shown in the layer panel.
Module 5
Map View → Reach Analyzer
What this module produces
A per-sub-unit ranking of habitat area with a variability chart, so you can see which reaches carry the most habitat and which fluctuate most between years.
Downloads it generates
Reach comparison CSV
Habitat area by sub-unit and year, ready for spreadsheet or statistical work.
Module 6
Map View → Hydro
What this module produces
A hydrologic profile of the basin: gage identity and record period, daily hydrograph, seasonal flow statistics, PRISM precipitation, and a flow–habitat regression (Habitat = β · ln(Q) + α) reporting r, R² and p-value.
Example reports it generates
Hydro Analysis Report (PDF)
2–3 pages
Module 7
Map View → Hydro (below the module)
What this module produces
A shareable PDF for the selected HUC-8 and species that combines habitat, streamflow and precipitation in one table, plus a precipitation × habitat regression.
Example reports it generates
Basin Analysis Report
1–2 pages
Module 8
Map View → Report
What this module produces
A configurable multi-section PDF documenting the basin end to end, written from live data with a progress indicator while each section is fetched.
Example reports it generates
Comprehensive Basin Report
5+ pages
Module 9
Map View → Basins → Export Data
What this module produces
GIS-ready files: boundary geometry, habitat shapefiles clipped to the basin (single year or all years zipped), and 30 m Landsat GeoTIFF mosaics with an on-map preview and opacity control.
Downloads it generates
Habitat shapefiles (ZIP)
Zipped shapefiles clipped to the selected HUC-8 boundary — one year, or every available year in a single archive.
Landsat 30 m GeoTIFF
Cloud-filtered scene or multi-scene mosaic, exported with geographic extent and a preview thumbnail.
Boundary GeoJSON
Exact geometry of the selected HUC unit, ready for GIS or web mapping.
Module 10
/dashboard (the primary analysis view)
What this module produces
A side-by-side comparison of up to ten basins: n, r, R², p-value, slope β, intercept and fitted equation per basin, plus cross-basin outlier detection and long-term flow and habitat trends.
Example reports it generates
Multi-Basin Comparison Report (PDF)
12+ pages
Downloads it generates
Basin analysis CSV
Regression statistics, β, average and extreme flows, plus flow and habitat trend slopes for every basin compared.
Module 11
Opened from the map or the Dashboard table
What this module produces
A focused page for one HUC-8 basin: basin profile, regression model for the active species, annual habitat area chart, mean annual flow chart and the full annual data table.
Module 12
/table
What this module produces
A tabular view of the loaded dataset — header names, values and row/column counts — useful for checking data before exporting it.
